On My Side - Redefinition

Artist: On My Side
Title: Redefinition
Release: 2007
Label: Words of War Records

Track List:
1. Firm Grasp
2. On My Side
3. Definition
4. Speak Out
5. Prison Break
6. Do It Right
7. Gossip

I miss this band so much. It still bums me out that they broke up. Great dudes playing great hardcore with extremely positive lyrics is what you're in for here. Musically they remind me of Judge and other similar late 80's NYHC bands but Carlos' lyrics are far more upbeat and far less negative. He told me once that he actually had a cold that caused his sinuses to back up when they were recording this so the vocals didn't turn out how they wanted at all.

Carlos was awesome enough to send me a CD copy of the "Redefinition" EP the other day. I've heard this a thousand times, but it's always been rips from a cassette or vinyl, and never ones done properly. So hearing it with this much clarity for the first time is, for myself, a real treat.

Here's a little bonus (I guess...). This is a rip of my cassette copy. I got a decent tape deck at Goodwill for like 8 bucks a couple of months ago so I've decided to start ripping some of my cassettes. After some minor tweaking in Adobe Audition I'd say this sounds pretty damn good for a tape. But still not as good as the CD.

Scans of the cover and lyrics insert included.

The Upsets - Tommy Gun Heart

Artist: The Upsets
Title: Tommy Gun Heart
Release: 1998
Label: TKO Records

Track List:
1. Tommy Gun Heart
2. Sonic Reaction
3. Vampires

Straight from the bargain bin this was a pretty awesome find. The Upsets are polished but not overproduced punk rock. More rock than punk, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. "Tommy Gun Heart" is catchy as hell and will get stuck in your head. I can't find anything about this band but this record is apparently still for sale at TKO Records. I got my copy for a fair bit less from End of an Ear in Austin.

1. Creepshow - Something Inside
2. Growing Concern - Beyond / Your Democracy

Conan O'Brien & The Legally Prohibited Band - Live at Third Man

Artist: Conan O'Brien & The Legally Prohibited Band
Title: Live at Third Man
Release 2010
Label: Third Man Records

Track List:
1. Blue Moon of Kentucky
2. Rock This Town
3. Polk Salad Annie
4. On The Road Again
5. Too Much Monkey Business
6. King Creole
7. Seven Nation Army
8. Creep
9. The Weight
10. Twenty Flight Rock

This is way out of place here, but who cares. Considering how popular Conan O'Brien is it's kinda odd to me that I haven't heard too much buzz about this record. Especially since it's actually pretty good. It's a little light on the comedy, but that's okay since Conan's TV show will be back soon. All the songs are covers. The White Stripes and Radiohead aside, mostly from older Rock & Roll acts that are from before even my parents time. Not that that's a bad thing at all.

I ripped this myself from my fresh new copy that came in the mail earlier this week. It sounds fantastic considering it's a live record so I'm guessing the setup they used to record it was pretty fancy. The vinyl itself, being brand new, was in pristine condition so I had to do very little editing to the rip. Just the standard subsonic hum removal, reducing the subtle static noise that all records seem to have, and fixing only a single noticeable pop.

I'm not in the habit of posting things in FLAC, it's too large and the quality difference between FLAC and LAME V0 is negligible, but I thought I'd make an exception here. For the FLAC version each side will have to be downloaded separately.

Pools/Cleric - split

Artist: Pools/Cleric
Title: split
Release: 2008
Label: self released

Track List:
1. Pools - Who We Are
2. Pools - Succombs to a New Life
3. Cleric - Men of Blasphemy

I promise I'll get back to posting more hardcore records soon, but first here's the 2008 split between Denton/Austin's Pools and Dallas' Cleric.

It's rare that I meet people who actually like screamo as much as I do. It's not exactly easy listening. Even amongst fans of hardcore, which to the general public is little more than yelling and chaotic noise, "screamo" is often a four letter word no matter the context. Getting a chance to talk with Garrick, guitar and vocals for Pools, and Jason Warhammer (of Resigned to Fate) about music while sitting on his roof during Chaos in Tejas a few years ago was a memorable experience for myself. I always get a little excited whenever I talk to someone in person about bands like pg. 99, Orchid, and Saetia. It's not something I get to do often.

Even though it's so close I really wish I made it up to Denton more frequently. Pools, even though they are on hiatus or whatever now, is part of the reason for that. There's a whole lot of dudes up there who love good screamo and play in lots of awesome bands whose shows I don't go to enough.

On the other side of this split is Cleric. Birthed from the remains of Cøma in 2007/2008, my memory kinda blurs on when exactly, they play what I guess would be called doom metal. I don't really know. Much like Oi (see this post), it's something I know I like, I just don't have a whole lot of experience with so I don't feel comfortable talking about it lest I sound completely ignorant.

Regardless of what you might call it, Cleric is loud, heavy, and evil. Knowing that, it should be no surprise that Kill the Client's Chris "Hollywood" Richardson is the mastermind behind it all. Before Cøma/Cleric I knew he sure as shit could play guitar but it turns out he's pretty good at vocals too.

Needlessly high resolution scans included. I dunno if I'm gonna keep including high res scans of my own records. It takes too damn long to do and it increases the file size of the download by as much as 200%.

Anger Management Session 1

Artist: Various
Title: Anger Management Session 1
Release: 2002
Label: Martyr Records

Track List:
1. Kill Your Idols - All Those Wasted Calling Cards...
2. Holding On - Turn the Screw
3. Close Call - Left in the Dark
4. My Luck - Just Friends
5. Diehard Youth - Scene Vampire Killers
6. What Feeds the Fire - Without the Weapon

I somehow ended up with two copies of this 7". I don't remember where I got the first one. Either way Kill Your Idols and My Luck are both really awesome. The rest of the bands on this compilation are pretty generic 2000 to 2009 American hardcore. In 2002 I might have been excited about every band on this compilation, but in 2010 I can't help but roll my eyes at most of them.

That being said this is really worth it for the Kill Your Idols and My Luck songs. I've posted My Luck here before, so you might have already heard them. If not think Carry On or later Champion.

600 DPI scans of the artwork included.

Pizza/Tideland - split

Artist: Pizza/Tideland
Title: split
Release: 2009
Label: Cosmic Debris Records

Track List:
1. Pizza - Do-Do-La-La
2. Pizza - In Your Head
3. Tideland - Graveyard Song

Both Pizza and Tideland hail from Sterling, Virginia. That town should sound familiar to some of you out there. It's the home of pg. 99 and a myriad of other fantastic bands. I'm pretty certain Tideland has at least one member who was in pg. 99, and you can hear the noisy Sonic Youth influence that pg. 99 was apparently all about. However neither Tideland or Pizza is remotely close to screamo or hardcore.

Pizza's two songs are nice and quiet. Relaxing even. But not in the almost eerie way fellow Virginians Pygmy Lush can be at times. In comparison the Tideland side of this 7" is pretty loud. But not as loud as one might expect if all you've heard from the Sterling scene is pg. 99 or Pig Destroyer.

I'm still not sure what the hell the animal on the cover is supposed to be. Some kind of rat dog? I've included 600 DPI scans of the cover and insert so maybe you can figure it out.

You might still be able to buy this over at Robotic Empire. Their store doesn't say how many are left in stock and this has been out for a while so don't hesitate to order it.

As I Look to the Future

Artist: Various
Title: As I Look to the Future
Release: 1997
Label: Solution Records

Track List:
1. Capgun - Take a Hint
2. Bane - Lay the Blame
3. Driven - Fear
4. The Rolemodels - Messy

I bought this solely because of the track by Bane but I was surprised to find that The Rolemodels song was actually my favorite on this. From what little I can gather this compilation was put out around 1997, it may have been 1996 but I'm gonna go with 1997 since that's when someone on a certain message board says they remember buying it.

The Capgun song isn't anything special, pretty typical 90's hardcore. If you've heard anything from that era you've probably already heard this. Bane's offering to this compilation is apparently some of their earliest recorded output. It definitely sounds more youthful in comparison to "Give Blood", and that was nine years ago now! I'm not really a fan of the song by Driven. It's got some dude from Killswitch Engage on it, vocals I think. Not my style at all.

What is my style though is The Rolemodels. When I was looking over the inside of the sleeve I noticed that the address given for them was Denton, TX. I thought this was pretty weird since the rest of the bands were from the North East so with a little help from google I found out that their drummer was actually the drummer from The Marked Men and their bass player was one of the early bass players for The Riverboat Gamblers. It seems the drummer started The Rolemodels not long after moving to Denton from Connecticut. I guess it makes sense that I found a copy of this in Carrollton, which isn't too far from Denton. Pretty interesting connection between two far away (especially in the 90s) places if you ask me.

600 DPI scans of the sleeve included.

The Riverboat Gamblers/Electric Eel Shock - split

Artist: The Riverboat Gamblers/Electric Eel Shock
Title: split
Release: 2004
Label: Gearhead Records

Track List:
1. The Riverboat Gamblers - That's Entertainment!
2. Electric Eel Shock - Rock & Roll Can Rescue the World!

I picked this split picture disc up at a local record store a few years ago. If you're from Texas you're probably already familiar with The Riverboat Gamblers. The Electric Eel Shock side of the split is the only song by them that I've heard. It's a little more on the rock side of punk rock but that's okay by me. This record doesn't fall under "hardcore" at all, but I'm yet to meet a fan of hardcore or punk that doesn't enjoy The Riverboat Gamblers.

The Riverboat Gamblers originated nearby in Denton, TX but have since moved to Austin, TX. They've gone through a slew of members, most of who have been in other awesome bands. All I really know about Electric Eel Shock is that they're from Japan.

This is my first solid attempt at ripping a record with my new record player. I think it sounds fantastic. There's a bit of noise at the beginning and end of The Riverboat Gamblers' track but I couldn't seem to get it out without degrading the rest of the audio. It's not terribly distracting and might actually be from the recording not the record itself.

20. The Warriors - Horror Show

I'm not really a big oi fan. That doesn't mean I don't like what I've heard. It's just that where I'm from it's a pretty underrepresented subgenre of punk so it's not something I'm exposed to that often. As such I've never really made much of an effort to really delve in too deep into the world of shaved heads and boots (I'm more of a long hair indoor desk job kind of guy anyways). This compilation seems like as good a place to start as any based on what little I know.

I can't really comment on whether or not this compilation good. I mean I like it, but aside from Sham 69 there isn't anything else on here that I've heard more than a few songs of. And outside of this compilation the only oi band I've really heard is On File. I know how annoying it is when someone who knows next to nothing about a type of music that is important to you starts singing the praises of thoroughly mediocre bands that play that type of music and when asked don't know any of the genre defining bands. I think I'd run the risk of being that guy when it comes to oi. So I'll just say this, as someone who knows little about oi this is a pretty cool compilation. Big fans of oi may or may not like it, but they probably already know about it anyways.

I must say, it warms my heart a little when I think about relations between the US and Japan over the last several decades. Considering the awful shit that went down between our nations it's a wonder we don't hate each other. Whenever I see a band from Japan playing in America everyone around me is always super excited they made the trip. I imagine the feeling in Japan is very similar when our bands play over there. With broken Japanese and broken English I've had the privilege to communicate with a few dudes touring the country from Japan and have been left with the impression that their respect and excitement about our hardcore is just as great as ours for theirs.

Anyways, enough sentimental talk. This here is a compilation of Japanese and American crusty hardcore. Real great stuff. Kinda the same deal as the next post, Sound Pollution in the states and MCR Company in Japan.

This is the first compilation record from Systematic Death. The second one will be posted shortly. Off the top of my head I can't really think of many other bands from Japan that draw such obvious influence from Minor Threat. If you're not already familiar with Systematic Death then that should give you an indication as to what to expect. Fast, straight-forward, hardcore punk.

This particular encode is from a FLAC rip from the same generous soul that made available FLAC rips that some of my previous posts are encoded from. I've seen other half assed rips elsewhere on the internet which is a damn shame. If you're gonna do it do it right, sheesh.

Tracks 1-11 from the demo cassette tape (1983)
Tracks 12-19 from "Systema" 7" flexi (1984, Hold Up Records)
Tracks 20-21 are outtakes from the "Systema" recordings
Track 22 from "Hold Up Omnibus" 8" compilation (Hold Up Records, 1984)
Tracks 23-44 from "Systema 2" cassette tape (1984, Systema Project)
