Holy crap guys, it's Zouo.
For the longest time I always thought I'd only ever have poorly ripped mp3s of the one EP Zouo put out in 1984 and the two songs on "Hardcore Unlawful Assembly". While they're not quite as popular as some of the bigger similar bands of the era (G.I.S.M., etc.) just about everyone I know that is aware of who they are loves "The Final Agony". Well, like a year ago or so it seems that someone over in Japan realized that people actually want to have a chance to hear their music or something because there's been a slew of reissues and an LP with songs that were only recorded live.
This CD is from an awesome box set that came out earlier this summer. It's also the first time any of these songs have been on CD. It also came with a live set DVD. The CD itself combines all of the recent reissue material.
Tracks 1-4 from "The Final Agony" 7" (1984, AA Records)
Tracks 5-6 from "Frustration" 7" (2011, Crust War Records)
Tracks 7-18 recorded live at Duck Studio in Osaka 1984/9/7
If you can read Japanese you can find more information about the box set over at Black Lodge's website. It doesn't say if this is sold out. But I'm gonna go ahead and assume it probably is.
NO POWER!

Forward - While You Alive
Artist: Forward
Title: While You Alive
Release: 1998
Label: H.G.Fact
1. Melt to the Other Side
2. Penetration
3. Absolutely
4. Fight Against
5. Over the Matter of Course
6. Vomit All / Change
I've finally stopped aching from Choas in Tejas. If you've never been, it's like Christmas only way more punk.
This year's personal highlight was without a doubt Forward. I missed them the last time they came through the US in 2006 so I made it a point to see them three times. It's a good thing I have a real job this year, because at past Chaos in Tejas' I've had to make hard decisions about what bands I want to support. This year I was able to get a copy of every CD/record Forward had with them. So here's the first of the CDs, "While You Alive" from 1998. I think "Absolutely" might be my favorite Forward song.
I'll post the rest of the Forward stuff, plus some other things I picked up during Chaos in Tejas, over the next few days. This CD can still be purchased, but be prepared to pay a lot more than the standard $10!.
Here's some video's from their show in Denton a few days before Chaos in Tejas.
The last one is Forward covering G.I.S.M.'s "Endless Blockades of the Pussyfooter". Too bad it doesn't keep going, because right after that they covered "Nih Nightmare".

On a kind of related note, Sugi, artist and bass player for Warhead is finally putting out an artbook through Bloodsucker Records. I had the immense honor of meeting Sugi for the first time in Denton and had several delightful conversations with him during Choas in Tejas. When he mentioned his artbook I have to admit I got a little giddy. I kind of collect things with his art on it, so an actual book with his stuff is something I've dreamed of for a long time. If you were smart you'd send Guy an email at diskshopmisery@gmail.com and order a copy.

Fuckheads - 2011 Summer Tour Tape
Artist: Fuckheads
Title: 2011 Summer Tour Tape
Release: 2011
Label: self released
1. Lion
2. Sit Around
3. Grinder
4. Traitor
5. Choke
6. Empty
This has been sitting in my tape player for a while now. I just never got around to ripping it until recently.
Fuckheads are from Boston and play crazy distorted noise in the same vein as D-Clone. Their longest song is a minute and 13 seconds so they never even come close to breaking the two minute rule. You'll either love this or think it shouldn't even be considered music.

This Is Worth Mentioning
So unless you've been living in a cave you know that in the aftermath of the apparent defeat of the draconian "SOPA" anti-piracy law here in the U.S. a bunch of file sharing sites got taken down, most notably Megaupload. Others, like Mediafire, began disabling access to a great number of files voluntarily. I won't go into what I think about all that (take a guess) but I will say that should anything happen to the files I've posted here I'm prepared to spend the time to repost them if needed.
I really don't like making meta-posts like this, but Zer over at Church of Zer really inspired me. All of his files got wiped. But he's back and now all his files are FLAC! I cannot commend him enough for sticking with it and using what surely was a discouraging moment to make what he posts even better. If you like anything I post here there's a very strong chance you'll love what he posts if you're not already aware of his blog. I don't know if I'll switch to FLAC, but I sure won't stop sharing.
I don't get many comments (or readers, do ho ho ho), so I'm going to use this chance to solicit some. If you want to request something then take a look at my list of records and let me know if there's anything you want me to rip.

解剖室 - 邪
Artist: 解剖室 (Kaiboushitsu, Autopsy Room)
Title: 邪 (Yokoshi, Wicked)
Release: 2010
Label: H.G.Fact
1. 夜ニ狂ヘ (Yoru Ni Kyou He, Two Crazy Nights)
2. 谺 (Kodama, Tree Spirit)
3. 寄生蟲 (Kiseichuu, Parasite)
4. 傷 (Kizu, Wound)
5. 邪 (Yokoshi, Wicked)
6. 口 (Kuchi, Mouth)
7. 霊柩車 (Reikyuusha, Hearse)
8. 髪 (Kami, Hair)
I recently dropped a silly amount of money on records from Punk Alive Records (and you should to!). As I was browsing Matt's wares I came across this LP. I'm not exactly literate in Japanese so the only clue as to what it was was the H.G.Fact logo on the back. I tried to look it up but my 3G wasn't working at a reasonable speed so I decided to take a chance and buy it without knowing what I was getting. Not that it was a risky bet or anything, I can't think of a single release on H.G.Fact that I've heard and haven't at least liked a fair amount.
Now, I had a sneaking suspicion based on the artwork that it might be something Crow related. Some Crow records share the distinctively creepy style of line art found on the cover (I really wish I had a scanner big enough to do LP covers). Turns out I sorta was right, it's not a Crow record, but it is a Crow side-project. Kaiboushitsu means either Autopsy Room or Dissecting Room. I think Autopsy Room sounds cooler and Google image search turns up plenty of pictures of morgues and autopsy rooms so I think that's probably the more accurate translation. Google also turned up this blog post with a link to their first record. As luck would have it, this thing is super limited, 700 copies with no plans for a CD release!
So what does it sound like? Well, it kinda reminds me of Paintbox combined with Crow's other side-project Death Comes Along. Wailing vocals that sometimes border on carrying a tune but mostly sound like a agonized ghostly howl. The music walks a very fine line between being just downright gloomy and being standard Japanese punk from the 80's. The songs range from barely a minute to 16 and a half, with tempos to match. I think my favorite track is "谺", it's fast and is surprisingly catchy given the overall vibe of the rest of the record.
Here's a video of Kaiboushitsu playing this last December:

Back in 2005 Cluster Bomb Unit did a tour of Asia. donotconsume Records of Malaysia put out this partial discography CD for them to sell on the tour. Life on the Edge Records repressed 150 copies it at some point. I've seen this floating around elsewhere, but the rips were of dubious quality. I found a copy on Velted Regnub Distribution for a very reasonable price so I figured I'd rip it and throw it up here.

Chest Pain/Naw Dude - split
Artist: Chest Pain/Naw Dude
Title: split
Release: 2009
Label: Depleted Resource Records
Track List:
1. Chest Pain - Sexfear
2. Chest Pain - Brave New Bullshit
3. Chest Pain - Murderers
4. Chest Pain - Carcinogen
5. Chest Pain - Mass Produced Death
6. Naw Dude - Displacer Beast
7. Naw Dude - Failure Pile
8. Naw Dude - Posi Creep
9. Naw Dude - Violent Pizza
Since I've already posted Chest Pain's discography tape I'm mostly posting this for the Naw Dude side. I was kinda surprised that someone else hasn't posted this elsewhere (at least if someone has Google ain't finding it). If you've been here before the Chest Pain side of this split should be pretty familiar. Super fast, super pissed, super tight hardcore. The Naw Dude side is similar, but not so much so that you can't tell the difference between the two.

Hot Butter - Popcorn (Version Originale)
Artist: Hot Butter
Title: Popcorn (Version Originale)
Release: 1972
Label: Barclay Records
Track List:
1. Popcorn
2. At the Movies
Here's the 7" single version of "Popcorn" by Hot Butter from 1972. It's much closer to the Gershon Kingsley version than the M&H Band version.
This one is not from my collection. However it is from a FLAC rip of the record that I was able to find a while ago. I was listening to a local school district radio station a few months ago and this song came on. Normally they play more traditional 70's pop with a little bit of early 80's thrown in. Which is to say, nothing that sounds like "Popcorn". Thanks to Shazam I was able to identify the song. It took a while, but I was finally able to download a good rip of the single version. I converted the FLAC files to mp3 for convenience.

M&H Band - Popcorn
Artist: M&H Band
Title: Popcorn
Release: 1988
Label: Touch Records
Track List:
1. Popcorn (Butter Mix)
2. Popcorn (Reddenbacher Mix)
3. Popcorn (Radio Mix)
4. Popcorn (Jiffy Pop Mix)
5. Ordinopaso
I don't think I've been this excited about a record find in a while. Just a warning, this is not punk, at all. It's still awesome so that's why I'm posting it. If you're a fan of electronic music this is a must download in my opinion.
The song "Popcorn" has a bit of a history to it. Originally recorded in 1969 by Gershon Kingsley for his album "Music to Moog By". Hot Butter recorded their own cover of it in 1972. It was apparently the first electronic song to chart in America. Since then dozens of artists have covered "Popcorn". This 12" single by M&H is my favorite version that I've heard so far. Each mix has an Italio Disco feel to it that I think is perfect for the song.
For an in depth look at this song and all the artists who have covered it check out the Wikipedia page.

pg. 99 Reunion Show
Best night of my life.
It's kinda odd to know that, at least when it comes to experiences involving music, you've peaked at 26.
I flew out from DFW to Richmond for this show. I never fly anywhere for shows. But, I never saw them before they broke up so I've been waiting 8 or so years for this. I don't think I can write anything that will do the anticipation, the excitement, and sense of joyful release I felt even an ounce of justice.
Being in a room packed with total strangers but feeling as if every single one of them is on the same wavelength as myself is something really special. Few bands can make that happen. pg. 99 is one of them.
Major thanks to joshuashomburg for uploading their entire set.

Pyramids - Following the Tracks, Forcing Motion Through Phases
Artist: Pyramids
Title: Following the Tracks, Forcing Motion Through Phases
Release: 2006
Label: Slave Union
Track List:
1. Stationed
2. Drifting
3. Sleep Spindles & K-Complexes
4. Slow Wave
5. Delta
6. Paradoxical
7. Lucid
Sprawling, beautiful, and to use a disgustingly cliche word: epic screamo with a slathering of post-rock from Philadelphia. I'm definitely way late on this album but I suppose that's better than never. "Sleep Spindles & K-Complexes" is my favorite track. Very City of Caterpillarish.
As with any screamo you'll likely have a hard time understanding the lyrics. I haven't read them yet, but apparently this whole album is a metaphorical train ride. An odd concept, but the little bits of spoken word or nearly sung lyrics aren't as goofy as that may sound.

Profound - Integrity
Artist: Profound
Title: Integrity
Release: 1989
Label: Anti-Schelski Records
Track List:
1. Push to Start
2. Face the Fight
3. Suffer for My Choice
4. Bow for the Bucks
5. X's for Respect
6. Woflpack (D.Y.S.)
Profound is a decent enough West German ripoff of Judge and Slapshot. The D.Y.S. cover is actually pretty cool. Anti-Schelski records latter became known as Crucial Response records so all subsequent represses were on that label.

Bread and Water/Reason of Insanity - split
Artist: Bread and Water/Reason of Insanity
Title: split
Release: 2011
Label: Burrito Records
Track List:
1. Bread and Water - Keep Walking
2. Bread and Water - One Day
3. Bread and Water – Entertainment
4. Reason of Insanity – Expendable
5. Reason of Insanity – No Good Intentions
6. Reason of Insanity – Battle Hymn
7. Reason of Insanity – L.P.P.D.
8. Reason of Insanity – Clouded Judgment
9. Reason of Insanity - Outro
Bread and Water was a bit before my time, which is a shame, because they're one of the better hardcore bands to come out of Dallas in the last 10 or 15 years. I know absolutely nothing about Reason of Insanity except that their mailing address is Lafeyette, LA so I guess that's where they're from.
Bread and Water is notable for the dual male/female vocals. That's not something you see often in hardcore. I might get flak for saying this but they remind me of a way more punk version of Circle Takes the Square, but really only for that reason.
On the other side, Reason of Insanity offers up five very short songs and one outro track. The music is pretty simple hardcore, heavy sounding, but nothing fancy. My guess is that they were probably much better live. That isn't to say their side is bad, but considering how good the Bread and Water side is it's hard to find much of a reason to flip the record over. I love the lyrics to L.P.P.D. though.
On a related note, my buddy Jason Warhammer has recently started his own label, Timekiller Records. His first offering is a DVD of Bread and Water's last show. I don't think he has a website or anything, but you can definitely contact him at jasonjamesdesign@yahoo.com to inquire about it. I believe it's $15 + postage.
